What it is.
- Chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot answer questions, write drafts and summarise documents.
- Voice assistants are getting the same brains. Alexa+ arrived in Australia in early access in August 2026, and Siri and Android's Gemini are upgrading too.
- Most have a free version and a paid one, typically A$30 to A$45 a month.
Why it matters to you.
- This is the easiest place to start. Most people get value in the first week.
- On free and personal plans your chats may be used to train the AI unless you switch it off. Business plans exclude this.
- The privacy regulator advises against putting personal information into public AI tools.
